Dr. Mankey completed his adult psychiatry training at the combined Harvard program of Massachusetts General and McLean Hospitals. There, he was trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, supportive therapy, group therapy, and other modalities.
He also received expert education and experience using psychiatric medications, and is thoughtful in his use of them. If medications are indicated, Dr. Mankey attempts to maximize the effects of the medicines while minimizing the number of medicines, their doses, and their potential side effects.
Dr. Mankey regularly practices combined treatment, and does both therapy and medication management with many of his patients. Research shows that a number of conditions respond best to a treatment plan that combines medications and therapy, and Dr. Mankey enjoys providing both for his patients in one appointment and with one clinician. Dr. Mankey will also work closely with other therapists if a patient already has a longstanding, productive relationship with another clinician. In these circumstances, he likes to be in close contact with the therapist in order to coordinate and optimize treatment.
Dr. Mankey realizes that not every therapeutic style fits every patient, and he is skilled in combining various styles to find a good fit for each individual. He is open and inviting of feedback, and works collaboratively to customize each treatment plan to be both efficacious and personally suitable.
He also provides significant education about the various treatment options. He is experienced in treating many types of symptoms and conditions, some of which are listed in the left margin of this page.
He also has additional experience in treating adults with serious medical illness and their children. Having trained under Dr. Paula K. Rauch, author of Parenting an Emotionally Healthy Child When a Parent is Sick, he was a faculty member of the PACT (Parenting At a Challenging Time) Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Having recently relocated to Austin, TX to be closer to family, Dr. Mankey is excited to provide outstanding and personalized psychiatric care to the people of Austin, Westlake Hills and surrounding communities.
